Johns Hopkins University said it will lay off around 2,000 employees due to billions of dollars in federal research grants being cut. In February, President Donald Trump’s administration announced widespread cuts to National Institutes of Health grants for research institutions.

Johns Hopkins University announced Thursday that it will be cutting more than 2,000 jobs after it lost $800 million in funding from the US Agency for International Development amid the Trump administration's effort to significantly downsize the federal government.

The continuing resolution will need to be passed by the Senate and signed by Trump into law by Friday to avoid a shutdown.

Lawmakers have until midnight on Friday to pass a spending bill and avoid a government shutdown. The House passed a bill to temporarily fund the government for six months but Republicans don't have the votes to pass the bill in the Senate.
