Early Saturday morning, when a man dressed like a police officer knocked at the home of a Minnesota state legislator, marked the start of nearly 40 hours of violence and fear that swept through towns in an arc around Minneapolis.

From a legislator in downtown Minneapolis to a veteran Ohio congresswoman, many lawmakers included in the suspected Minnesota gunman’s list of targets are vowing not to bow down.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday reacted to the shootings of two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses in Minnesota, saying he prayed for their families and grieved for those in the state.
