Two Massachusetts hikers were rescued after becoming stranded on Mt. Washington. On February 2 around 6 p.m. NH Fish and Game was contacted after 911 received a call about hikers lost off-trail adjacent to the Jewell Trail on Mt. Washington.

If a pair of Massachusetts hikers had not properly prepared for a hike on Mt. Washington Sunday, they may not have survived the conditions they encountered, officials said.

The two experienced hikers fought chest-deep snow and freezing temperatures before huddling in snow to wait for rescuers.

The rescue process took 13 hours. Had the hikers not been experienced or prepared with proper gear, officials said they probably would not have survived.

After about an hour of trying to rescue themselves, McKee, 51, of Southborough, Massachusetts, and Beata LeLacheur, 54, of Westborough, Massachusetts, called 911. They reached New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers, who plotted their GPS coordinates and directed them toward the trail - just 34 feet (10 meters) away. It didn't work.
