NextEra Energy expects a 55% jump in power demand over the next 20 years versus the prior two decades, Chief Executive Officer John Ketchum told attendees at the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston on Monday.

NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE), the top U.S. developer of wind and solar generation, expects a 55% jump in power demand over the next 20 years - 6x faster than the 9% growth seen over the past two decades - and power plants fueled by natural gas can meet only a fraction of the electricity demand growth forecast through the end of the decade,

Some forms of energy are better positioned to meet electricity needs today from both timing and cost perspectives, NextEra Energy CEO John Ketchum said at CERAWeek by S&P Global.

NextEra Energy Inc., the biggest US utility and No. 1 developer of wind and solar generation, believes power plants fueled by natural gas can meet only a sliver of the unprecedented electricity demand growth forecast through the end of the decade.

NextDecade Corporation CEO Matt Schatzman said on Tuesday he expects natural gas demand to continue to grow at around 2% for the next 15 years.
