History was on the line in the KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 State Championship game. Sacred Heart Academy took on George Rogers Clark for a third time this season as they looked to win a record fifth-straight state championship.

Sacred Heart attacked on defense and swarmed the backboards on its way to a victory over Cooper on Friday in a Sweet 16 quarterfinal at Rupp Arena.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - For the first time in 34 years, George Rogers Clark will play for a girls basketball state championship, after the Cardinals knocked out Frederick Douglass in the Girls’ Sweet 16 on Saturday, 75-52.

A couple of late jumpers in the first quarter breathed life into Johnson Central’s bid to upset Sacred Heart. Then the four-time defending state champs pulled the plug. After a brief lull, the Valkyries rolled to a 71-25 win Thursday morning in the first round of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Girls Basketball Sweet 16 state tournament in Rupp Arena.

George Rogers Clark finished as state runner-up, falling to Sacred Heart 65-60. It’s the fifth-straight KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 title for the Valkyries, their ninth overall.
