The former Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama is enjoying Auburn football's dismay after the firing of Hugh Freeze.

Freeze is one of three full-time head coaches since 1948 to finish a tenure without a win against Auburn, joining Bryan Harsin and Doug Barfield. Cadillac Williams also led Auburn to a loss to Alabama as interim coach in 2022 as did Bill Oliver in 1998.

Despite the defense’s issues and Auburn ultimately losing the game, the performance showed the respect Durkin has in the locker room. Freeze never seemed to completely lose the team, but based on what players have said over the past week and Saturday’s performance, they were excited to play for Durkin.

Auburn may have fallen in overtime to Vanderbilt, but quarterback Ashton Daniels gave the Tigers every opportunity for a win.

Keldric Faulk and the Auburn defense didn’t exactly shine against Vanderbilt, allowing the Commodores 544 yards of offense in a 45-38 loss.
