The former Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama is enjoying Auburn football's dismay after the firing of Hugh Freeze.

The Alabama-LSU series installed another fine chapter in 2025, but the rivalry won't ever be the same again with SEC's new scheduling format.

The Tulane head coach brings winning credentials from Troy and Tulane but lacks SEC coaching experience as Auburn searches for Hugh Freeze's replacement.

Freeze is one of three full-time head coaches since 1948 to finish a tenure without a win against Auburn, joining Bryan Harsin and Doug Barfield. Cadillac Williams also led Auburn to a loss to Alabama as interim coach in 2022 as did Bill Oliver in 1998.

Trailing 28-21 early in the third quarter, Alabama outscored the Tigers 21-0 after touchdown runs from Roydell Williams, Jalen Milroe and Jase McClellan to secure the 42-28 win. The Crimson Tide defense allowed 478 yards of offense, including 382 combined yards from LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had 163 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Despite the changes, some fans and players still view the matchup as a significant rivalry, with one father calling it a "shame" it won't be annual. Alabama won the final scheduled annual game against LSU with a score of 20-9.
