Pete Rose was reinstated by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday, making him eligible for baseball’s Hall of Fame. Rose’s career was marked by gambling scandals and his permanent ban was lifted eight months after his death. The decision was met with pushback on social media, including from The Atlantic’s Norman Ornstein.

Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that Pete Rose has been officially taken off of its permanently ineligible list, potentially opening the door for him to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rose agreed to be placed on the permanently ineligible list in 1989, and two years later the Hall of Fame passed a rule stating that those on the permanently ineligible list were not eligible for election into the Hall. As such, Rose has never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.
