Los Angeles students and teachers return to class for the new academic year Thursday under a cloud of apprehension after a summer filled with immigration raids and amid worries that schools could become a target in the Trump administration's aggressive crackdown.

LAUSD Supt. Carvalho expands aggressive defense of students and their immigrant families — including new collaborations with L.A. Mayor Bass and other area cities.

As students return to classrooms nationwide, Los Angeles is taking extra steps to protect them. Staff, police and volunteers will be stationed along school routes to prevent any interference from immigration officials.
