It is an ambitious social experiment of our moment in history. Experts say it could accomplish something that parents, schools and other governments have attempted with varying degrees of success — keeping kids off social media until they turn 16.

Here's what goes into effect as of Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025. As of Jan. 1, no one in Florida under the age of 14 will be allowed to have a social media account. This controversial bill replaced one that Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed because he wanted parents to have more of a role.

A lot of new laws have gone into effect in Florida this year, nearly 180 of them in July and 34 more in October. As of the first of the year, just nine more bills will become state law, but some of them make some sweeping and controversial changes.
