This was a week from hell for many Mets fans. Not only did they lost franchise home run king Pete Alonso in free agency to the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers lured All-Star closer Edwin Diaz away with a record contract for a reliever.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman revealed that his team only seriously considered signing Diaz after the Mets brought in Williams. “He was at the top of the list, but starting the offseason we just didn’t think it was that realistic,” Friedman told SportsNet LA on Friday after welcoming Diaz to Los Angeles.
Any hope that New York Mets fans had about All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Díaz reversing course and returning to Queens officially ended on Friday, Dec. 12, when they officially signed their respective contracts with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.
ESPN has announced its first Major League Baseball game next season will be on April 15. The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the New York Mets on Jackie Robinson Day.
"The Padres' players in the talks include right-hander Nick Pivetta, outfielder Ramón Laureano and relievers Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada. San Diego, in turn, is asking the Mets about their young major leaguers and all of their top prospects, both pitchers and position players."
