Fulton County officials are warning the public after a raccoon tested positive for rabies on Sunday.

A rabid dog attack in 1885 left 9-year-old Joseph Meister bitten in 14 places and facing an almost certain death sentence.

The Highland County Health Department was notified on July 30 that a bat collected in the county has tested positive for rabies. There is no known exposure to a human or pet at this time.

An ill domestic cat from Pleasanton was put down this summer after testing positive for rabies, which prompted local organizations to remind pet owners to keep their animals' vaccinations up to date.
