If the Dallas Cowboys want to pursue Bill Belichick as the team's next head coach, the door has been opened with an interesting UNC contract development.

Ever since Bill Belichick agreed to become the next head football coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, questions regarding whether he would return to the NFL have surrounded him. Many have pointed to his buyout clause with UNC: $10 million if he terminates his employment with the school before June 1,

"Sources tell CBS Sports — and UNC confirmed this week — that there is no fully-executed and signed contract between Belichick and UNC. And industry sources say that could lead to a legal gray area about how much, if any, of a buyout there would be if Belichick left for the pros.

As North Carolina coach Bill Belichick continues to build out his staff in Chapel Hill, he's keeping his promise of having a "strong NFL presence." According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Belichick and the Tar Heels are working towards finalizing a deal with longtime NFL special teams coach Mike Priefer.

On Wednesday, Belichick made two more additions to the staff for next season. Belichick brought in former NFL special teams coach Mike Priefer as North Carolina's new special teams coach and then hired Will Friend as the new offensive line coach, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Like many coaches, Belichick has tried to utilize the transfer portal to the fullest, but he took a major loss on Wednesday. That came in the form of the Tar Heels' leading passer in 2024, Jacolby Criswell, who's made the decision to hit the portal in search of a new program. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported the news.

Outside of the Lombardi family, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach has hired former Browns coach Freddie Kitchens (offensive coordinator), son Steve (defensive coordinator), former CFL coach Chris Jones (defensive assistant), Billy Miller (general position assistant) and Moses Cabrera (strength and conditioning).
