Japan has reported its exports fell in May as shipments of autos to the U.S. dropped nearly 25% from a year earlier due to higher tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan's exports fell for the first time in eight months in May, data showed on Wednesday, indicating that sweeping U.S. tariffs were threatening the country's fragile economic recovery. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump have yet to reach a trade deal.

Exports to the U.S. slid due to weaker demand for cars, auto parts and chip-making machinery.
