'The mayor is continuing to work': LaToya Cantrell returns to City Hall after indictment
That indictment, returned at the federal courthouse Friday, accuses Cantrell of 11 counts including wire fraud, conspiracy to obstruct justice and lying to a federal grand jury in pursuit of continuing her amorous relationship with her alleged beau, former New Orleans Police Department officer Jeffrey Vappie.
The allegations hearken back to 2017, when Cantrell was a city councilwoman, and this reporter reviewed hundreds of pages of her city credit card records.
LaToya Cantrell is the first sitting mayor of New Orleans to come under federal indictment. One law professor says it is very unlikely Cantrell will still be in office if or when her trial begins.
