Allegheny County Council wants to make more than $70 million in cuts to the county executive’s budget proposal and lower a property tax increase to 28.5 percent instead of 46.5 percent.

Allegheny County Council members presented their plan Tuesday to make over $70 million in cuts to Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato’s budget proposal as a means to lower the proposed property tax increase rate that could hit residents next year.

Previously, County Executive Innamorato proposed a 46% tax increase. The council is suggesting a 28.5% increase instead.

Allegheny County Council introduced a counterproposal to County Executive Sara Innamorato’s 2025 spending plan Tuesday. Council’s plan would cost the median homeowner roughly $10 more in property taxes each month.

Allegheny County Council is now weighing the idea of a smaller property tax hike for next year. This comes after several members indicated that they were already going to reject Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato's plan.

It was the largest proposed property tax increase in the history of Allegheny County, and Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato said there would be mass layoffs and service cuts without it. But now council members say they can cut that increase almost in half without reducing staff or services.

Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato argued Wednesday that despite a property tax increase, her proposed 2025 budget would spur economic growth.
