The forecaster warns of further disruptive conditions as the temperature is expected to fall to minus 12 and more snow will fall with chances of further school closures
Several villages in an English region have been cut off as heavy snowfall prompted chaos across the country. An upgraded yellow snow and ice warning is currently in play along the Yorkshire coast, with more inland towns and villages to see a "5cm white blanket".
Temperatures on Friday will struggle to rise, with inland areas seeing highs of just 4 to 6°C. Over high ground from northern England northwards, and where there is snow cover in Scotland, temperatures may remain below freezing. It will be less cold near windward coasts in the west and later in the far northwest, where values could reach 9 to 11°C.
