Dr Sam Engwell is a member of BGS’s volcanology team. Sam's research combines numerical modelling, statistical and field analysis techniques to build a picture of past eruptive activity, and inform our understanding of future behaviour. Sam was the recipient of the Geological Society’s William Smith Fund in 2023, which is awarded to geoscientists within the first 10 years of their career. The fund recognises excellent contributions to geoscience research and its application, in the UK and intern

Welcome to Core Questions, the brand new podcast from the British Geological Survey that uncovers how geology shapes our world. In this first episode, remote sensing geoscientist Alessandro Novellino explains how different types of satellites work, what kind of data they collect and how we use that information to study our planet. Plus, we’ll settle the ultimate question: could a satellite see you waving down on Earth? 🎧 Listen now: https://ow.ly/o72h50VuBSN | British Geological Survey

Under the microscope, Caithness Flagstone reveals its finely layered structure, with low porosity and minimal water flow. Formed around 390 million years ago during the Devonian Period, when Scotland was near the Equator, it consists of mud and fine sand deposited in the Orcadian Basin. Tightly packed, it has been used for centuries in masonry, paving, and roofing, becoming a key part of Caithness' construction heritage. | British Geological Survey

Since 2015, BGS and @boulbyundergroundlab (BUL) have been researching how to better understand underground hydrogen storage and compressed air energy storage (CAES) in halite (rock salt). Many gasses, including hydrogen and compressed air, could be stored in man-made caverns underground for when we need it most. Long duration energy storage, such as CAES or hydrogen energy in salt caverns, are a key component to a decarbonised, secure and affordable energy system and will allow us to balance our

Last October, aurora cameras at BGS Eskdalemuir captured these stunning images of the northern lights⚡ This major geomagnetic storm led to disturbances in declination, as well as horizontal and vertical intensities. During the storm’s peak (18:30–03:30 UT), the magnetic declination (angle between true north and magnetic north) changed by more than 1°. This kyanite schist thin section contains the minerals garnet, biotite, kyanite, sericite, quartz and feldspar. In the Plane Polarized view, the garnet and kyanite are grey, biotite is brown, and the sericite, quartz and feldspar are white. In the Cross Polarized view, the sericite has a distinctive bright and finely ‘speckled’ appearance. The rock has a well-developed metamorphic foliation which is most clearly defined by trails of aligned biotite crystals. Crystals of kyanite are less abundant

Did you know that between 200 and 300 UK earthquakes are detected by BGS each year? Only around 20 to 30 of these are felt by people and are typically relatively small. However, occasionally more significant seismic events, exceeding magnitude 5, can occur in the UK. 'The BBC has had the fossil identified by the British Geological Survey (BGS) which confirmed it is a larger part of a crinoid. Crinoids are marine animals that first appeared in the Cambrian period, more than 500 million years ago, making it one of the oldest complex animals on the planet, and versions of it still exist today. It has a flexible stem, which is attached to the sea floor, with branching arms arranged around the main body of the animal at the top of the stem - although it is an ani
