Aymer de Maccuswell (Maxwell) and Caerlaverock Castle John Maxwell who was behind the building of the old castle at Caerlaverock died in 1241 without an heir. His brother succeeded in his titles and lands including Caerlaverock Castle. Sometime during his lifetime he ordered the building of the triangular moated castle at Caerlaverock (possibly 1260's). The Bakehouse, Caerlaverock Castle With the enormous Maxwell household eating up to two loaves of bread a day, plenty of bread was needed to be made at Caerlaverock Castle. That bread was made here at the castles bakehouse.
