After the Revolutionary War, George Washington and his fellow Revolutionary War veterans worked to build new private and public institutions. One of the public institutions was the Alexandria Academy. Dr. William Brown, Revolutionary War physician, led a Board of Trustees comprised of other Revolutionary War veterans to help start the free school for orphan children in 1785.
