The Coastguard Rescue 900 helicopter team, based in Sumburgh, joined the RNLI Lerwick Lifeboat crew for a joint training session south of Lerwick Harbour. During the session, the RNLI crew practiced helicopter operations at sea through a winching exercise. This involved using a hi-line to safely guide the winch paramedic on and off the lifeboat’s deck. The session gave both crews the opportunity to further develop and refine the skills they rely on when responding to emergencies in all condition

Battling storm force winds and enormous waves, the volunteer crew of RNLI Lerwick helped to rescue 15 people from the Green Lily.
