“Jerusalem the Golden” has a text with remarkably deep roots. The words are translated from a portion of the nearly 3,000-line satirical Latin poem De Contemptu Mundi, written around 1145 AD by the 12th-century monk Bernard of Cluny. The text was later revised and shaped into its familiar hymn form by John Mason Neale in 1849, giving us the version most commonly sung today.
