This week on Kickinitwithkacey he got an AAC device from a program in town. If you don’t know what an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device it can help Kacey communicate through an app called TouchChat. He can press a button and it will speak the word for him. It will require him and I to put in a lot of work to learn, practice, and stay consistent in order to see if this will improve our lives. On the twelfth day of literacy, my teacher gave to me: 12 AAC Devices! It is no accident that we mention AAC last—it’s the key to it all! AAC and literacy are both language-based beings. Students need access and exposure to robust AAC far beyond basic needs. Beginning students need to learn to comment and ask questions, give their opinion, speak to friends and family, and way more. No student needs to be ready! It’s the adults that need to be ready with the right AAC and the right way to teach.
