I love my raised beds! They allow me to garden without bending over as much, they make it easy to water, fertilize, plant, weed and harvest. However, they do have one pretty big draw back. Soil in raised beds is loose by design. Loose soil settles as it is watered and disappears completely when we pull it out in the roots of the plants we are going to dispose of. Each spring and fall I “recharge” my beds with new soil, compost and trace minerals. This spring I recharged my beds with @landscapers

Each year, as I move my plants 🌱 in and out of “plant room” in my garage, I am reminded that I really need a greenhouse. I just received a flier from Costco advertising the Royal Victorian Glass Greenhouse from @exaco. It was a great reminder that if you are planning on purchasing a new, high quality greenhouse, you owe it to yourself to drive over to Pflugerville and walk around the Exaco Showroom. If you order a high quality greenhouse from Costco, Home Depot or directly from any of the Europ

Even though fall is the best time of the year to move an established perennial, sometimes the plants we move die. While there are many reasons a transplanted perennial may not survive its move, one of the most common is air. Air pockets trapped in the soil that you use to backfill around your perennial can dry out the plants roots and this can lead to death. The eliminate, or at least greatly reduce air pockets in the soil around my transplants, I do two things. 1. Practice the “wet to wet” plan

If you want to grow potatoes 🥔 this spring, you need to go to your local nursery and pick up seed potatoes. If your seed potatoes 🥔 are small, you can plant the entire potato. However, if your seed potatoes are large you are going to cut them into smaller pieces with an “eye”. If you haven’t done this before, an eye is a term for the bud spot on the potato that generate the future potato plant. Cut large potatoes into 2-3 inch square “chunks” that contain an eye and then allow them to “scab” f

Have you ever wondered why so many local nurseries have been in business for decades? It is because they thrive when you thrive. With a superior selection of plants that are speci

Join me on Saturday, September 20 at 10 am @wabashfeedandgarden in the Houston Heights. I will be giving a presentation on what native pollinators bring to our gardens and how to use native plants to attract them. Fall is the best time of the year to garden in Texas. It is also the best time to take in a few garden lectures at your local garden center. Go to their social and website and find talks that will make you a better gardener. Come see me at Wabash and enjoy discounts from the nursery, p
